(Catania, September 26th-27th, 2008) – THE NIGHT OF RESEARCHERS
On Friday night the University welcame people on the occasion of the European event “the night of researches” and thousands of visitors had the chance to be in touch with the research world. There were many organized initiatives: stands, extensions, conferences, excursions, games, performances,…they were all aimed at introducing the common citizen to the research world. The event was successful, in fact, thousands of visitors invaded the pulsating heart of the athenaeum of Catania, then they stepped into the charming world of Science. They found out that researchers are ordinary people that make special things for everybody’s sake.
A lesson was dedicated also to every day science in order to help people understand how daily events, very often not considered because they belong to a natural routine, are applicable to Physics laws.
In the stand 29, I.I.S.S. “Q. Cataudella” of Scicli in collaboration with the Dojo Shotokan Karate-do of Scicli and the Physics Department and Astronomy of Catania introduced the activity of “The Physics of Karate” . The group, made up of Principal Ignazio Inclimona, Teacher Concetto Gianino, Karate Master Antonino Giannì, black-belt Claudio Arrabito and student Andrea Cannella carried out the experimental didactic activity of the study of Physics laws applied to the Karate techniques.
Teacher Gianino’s explanations and the contemporaneous performance by M° Gianni and black-belt Arrabito excited the visitors. They directly realized how Physical laws often presented at school to explain ideal systems, far away from daily life, are also fondamental principles by which year by year the techniques of a martial art have been optimized.
